Brother HL-5350DNLT network capable mono laser printer review

Top quality network capable printer

With impressive all-round performance, the new HL-5350DNLT printer is a very capable mono laser.  With Ethernet network connectivity built-in and 500 sheet paper capacity this printer is ideal for use in large workgroups.  It can use secure sockets layer (SSL) encryption which can be useful in strict corporate environments.  It also lends itself to small home office networks too with low price and cheap replacement cartridges.  Expect around 8000 pages from a high yield cartridge.  Automatic duplex printing allows printing on both sides of the paper, so it reduces costs (and helps save the planet!).

With a 3 years on site warranty, this cheap laser printer is really good value.  Buy now before stocks drop!

Who or what is root@notty?

root notty whm ssh hackedIf you’re looking through WHM’s process manager and you see root@notty mentioned as one of the processes, don’t be alarmed. It’s perfectly normal and it’s definitely not some hacker called ‘Notty’ who has suddenly got root permissions. Be honest, you’re here because you thought that 😉

You may also have seen sshd: root@notty in the output of ps aux too.

Why notty?

The term ‘notty’ just represents ‘no tty’ which roughly translates as meaning ‘no terminal’. When you login locally to any Linux machine the terminal will always appear in the process list as ‘tty’. If a connection is made via SFTP or you are copying files with SCP (as I did here on a test server prior to bringing up the screenshot above) then it will show as no tty (notty).

Where does TTY come from?

Many years ago, user terminals that were connected to computers were clunky and noisy Electro-mechanical Teleprinters also known as Teletypewriters. They took the latter phrase and chopped some characters out to get the TTY abbreviation:

TeleTYpewriter = TTY

Since then, TTY has been used as the shortened name for a text-only console. Here’s a teletypewriter in action:

Now you can’t say that things haven’t progressed!

Printer keeps printing pages when pc starts

If your printer keeps printing pages when your pc starts, then follow these steps to clear the print queue.

These instructions are for Windows 7 or Vista, and won’t do any harm to your PC. I usually advise this and 99.9% of clients will cure their printer problems this way.

  1. Click Start.
  2. In the box above, type cmd
  3. Right-click on cmd.exe (the command prompt shortcut) and select Run as administrator
  4. In the black box that appears, type net stop spooler then press Enter
  5. Type in del %systemroot%\System32\spool\printers\*   /Q then press Enter. (Note there is a space before the /Q)
  6. Type net start spooler then press Enter

The print queue on your Windows 7 or Vista PC will now be cleared out. Close the black command window using the cross at the top and restart your PC.
